Meet Jenny O. “Well Okay, Honey,” the first single off her debut EP, “Home” (Manimal Records), recently graced the season three premiere of HBO’s take on the vampire craze of late, “True Blood”.
A Long Island, NY, transplant, Jenny O. currently hangs her hat — and cello — and piano — in Los Angeles where, after what she describes in a press release as “an artistic flurry of growing pains,” she settled down with a group of talented local musicians to create the initially self-released “Home.”
Don’t be surprised if you find yourself swaying and head-bopping along to this supremely catchy song. “Well Okay, Honey” is also downright sexy, which makes sense when you consider the fact that when contacted for a comment about the inspiration behind the tune, the songstress replied, “Six foot, four inches — cool teeth.” And despite this being a comparison not to be used lightly, the combo of twangy guitar, restrained yet driving percussion, hand-clapping (!) and echo harmonies are more than a bit reminiscent of The Beatles — with a sugar-dipped siren on vocals.
Manimal Records released “Home” on CD and vinyl earlier this month, but fans wanting a digital copy can pick one up via Jenny O.’s Bandcamp. In related news, the singer/songwriter — along with Paul McCartney, My Morning Jacket, Cee Lo Green, The Black Keys, She & Him, Modest Mouse, and Patti Smith, among others — also lent her voice to a track on “Rave On Buddy Holly,” a 19-song tribute album that was released in June on Fantasy Records/Concord Music Group.
As for shows, Jenny O. recently finished up with Barcelona and Holcombe Waller on the Making Friends Tour 2011, and can next be seen Sept. 2 at The Gorge in George, WA, as part of the Dave Matthews Band Caravan. Currently Jenny O. and the band are in the studio working on her first full-length effort with more shows slated for the fall.
